About Oak Valley Kids

About Bethany...

In 1994, I graduated from Randolph-Macon Woman's College with a degree in History and Political Science.  My goal was to teach High School, History and U.S. Government. After completing my degree and moving back to Maryland, a few twists and turns led me to pursue certification as a birth doula/labor assistant.  My new work with families and newborns brought me to a child care center's infant room in 2000 and I was hooked. After that experience,
I quickly completed the certification courses for teaching preschool as well as additional coursework for Infants & Toddlers and School-Age children.  I spent several more years in regionally and nationally recognized childcare and learning centers, working  from Infant Room Assistant to Infant/Toddler Lead Teacher to Assistant Director and, fairly quickly, Center Director.
Recently, I returned to the classroom and completed the "Maryland Model for School Readiness" certification followed by the Maryland Family Network's "Training of Trainers" Symposium.  Along with operating Oak Valley Kids, I now work with
First Connection, teach others to care for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school-aged children.  Currently, I am finishing the CDA, Child Development Associate, from the Council for Professional Recognition as well as completing more college course work in Early Childhood Education with the long term goal of completing a graduate degree in Early Childhood Education with Infant/Toddler concentration.

Philosophy and Goals of Oak Valley Kids

Children are happy and engaged when they feel safe and valued.

Children will be encouraged to enjoy process-- making the block tower, drawing the picture, reading the books. Children will be encouraged to learn by doing-- experiment, build, explore, take apart.  Children will be encouraged to  think-- set a goal, come up with a plan, carry out the plan and see what happens next.  Children will be encouraged to try-- be willing to fail, be strong enough to try again, be proud of success. Children will be encouraged to play-- be imaginative, creative, and spontaneous.
